Privacy Policy
Gist (“we”, “us”, “our”) is a news briefing product. This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have. By using Gist, you agree to this policy.
1. Information we collect
Depending on how you use Gist, we may process:
- Account information. If you sign in with email or Google, we receive identifiers such as your user ID, email address, and (for Google) your name and profile photo as provided by the sign-in provider.
- Usage in the product. Likes, saves, comments, Space follows, and related timestamps, tied to your account when you are signed in.
- Content you publish. If you create or manage a Gist Space, we store Space profile details (name, slug, bio, logo, topics, website domain) and posts you publish (titles, body text, images, status).
- Device and log data. Standard technical data such as IP address, user agent, and request metadata may be processed by our hosting and analytics providers when you use the service.
- Local preferences. On your device we may store settings such as summary length, topic order, and cached feed data to make the app faster.
We do not sell your personal information. We do not use your content to train third-party foundation models for unrelated products.
2. How we use information
- Provide, secure, and improve the Gist feed, briefs, and Spaces.
- Authenticate you and sync likes, saves, comments, and follows.
- Generate story briefs with AI providers when a brief is needed (article text is sent to those providers for summarization).
- Moderate abuse, prevent fraud, and meet legal obligations.
- Understand aggregate product usage (for example via Firebase Analytics where enabled).
3. AI processing
Gist may send article titles and extracted article text to language model providers (currently including Groq and Google Gemini) to create short briefs. Those providers process that content under their own terms and data policies. Do not submit sensitive personal data in Space posts that you would not want processed for summarization.
4. Sharing
We share information only as needed to run Gist:
- Infrastructure: Google Firebase (Authentication, Firestore, Storage, Hosting, Analytics) and Google Cloud Run for the API.
- AI providers: as described above, for generating briefs.
- Legal: if required by law, regulation, or to protect rights, safety, and the integrity of the service.
Public Space profiles and published posts are visible to other users of Gist. Unpublished drafts are limited to Space owners and editors.
5. Retention
Editorial feed stories may be pruned on a rolling basis. Saved stories and your engagement history are kept while your account remains active. Space posts remain until you delete them or delete the Space / account, subject to backups and legal holds.
6. Your choices and rights
- You can browse much of the feed without signing in.
- You can update Space profile content you control, and remove posts you publish.
- You may request access, correction, or deletion of personal account data by contacting us (see below). We may need to verify your identity.
- You can stop using the app and clear local app storage / site data in your browser or device settings.
7. Children
Gist is not directed to children under 13 (or the minimum age required in your country). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us information, contact us and we will take appropriate steps.
8. Security
We use industry-standard providers and access controls (including server-side access to Firestore). No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure.
9. International transfers
Our providers may process data in the United States, the European
Union (our Firestore region is europe-west1), and other
locations. By using Gist you understand that your information may be
processed in countries with different data-protection laws than your
own.
10. Changes
We may update this policy from time to time. We will change the effective date above and, when changes are material, provide additional notice in the product where appropriate.
